CHALLENGE

Malnutrition in rural and tribal areas is high in the 0-5 age group of children in Maharashtra. Especially teenage girls have high levels of malnutrition. Similarly, women and pregnant women between 30 and 45 years of age are anaemic. This is the highest number of malnutrition and deaths due to malnutrition in rural areas and tribal areas in Maharashtra.

Disadvantaged women in rural areas, face many obstacles when trying to balance their chores. They are expected to support their family by managing to provide proper nutrition as well as support their husbands directly or indirectly out in the farm or by doing some sort of physical labour. The family income is meagre and rising expenses mean most women have to compromise on their own and their children’s nutrition requirement. Due to the low social status of some population groups, their diet often lacks in both quality and quantity. Women who suffer malnutrition are less likely to have healthy babies. Malnutrition and anaemia are common among Indian women.

5 lakh 13 thousand 737 children in the age group of 0-5 years in Maharashtra are malnourished. And 75 thousand 411 children are severely malnourished. ( source - Women & children's development - Maharashtra - January 2019 )

PLAN

Recognizing this issue, Sakal Social Foundation started the Organic Nutrition kitchen garden -training program in collaboration with the Reliance Foundation and Rajmata Jijau Mission for release of malnutrition in 2017. We have Designed nutrition-based cultivation models in homestead lands. kitchen gardens are intended to enrich the diet and improve the nutrition status of the women and children. Most of the rural folks have a small strip of land adjacent to their homes which can be utilised for cultivating nutrition rich fruits and vegetables. Our team of botanists and doctors along with “Aanganwadi” workers provide the technical, action-oriented nutrition knowledge and counselling skills needed to support women to grow fruits and vegetables.

IMPACT

Through this program we are provided training of organic nutrition kitchen garden in the rural areas and tribal areas to school teachers, anganwadi workers and helpers. Under this training, we conduct scientific training workshops than on how to take the maximum vegetable organic in the shortest possible space. How to develop garden plan and design, which vegetables should be taken during which season and how to care of the garden. Schools and Anganwadis' are selected for this program because there is space and water facility in every school and all the children in the village come to school and anganwadi every day. Under this initiative, a total of 55 nutrition kitchen gardens have been created in 15 villages in Pune district since 2017. The daily organic vegetables in the school nutrition kitchen garden are mixed in the their mid-day meal. Therefore, the weight of children in 0-5 years of age has increased, their HB has increased. Similarly, adolescent girls and pregnant women are also given to the vegetable in this school nutrition kitchen garden. This initiative has benefited 3,500 children's. In the Amravati district of Maharashtra, Melghat is majorly affected with malnutrition problem. In this area, Sakal Social Foundation has added 120 families with help of Mahan trust to their program. The cost of one organic nutrition kitchen garden training/workshop program is Rs 40,000 We Need financial help to implement this activity in maximum villages.
