Issue:
"Maher" is founded by Sister Lucy Kurien, a senior social worker. Sister Lucy Kurien joined Mumbai in 1988 as a social worker to work for the Hope Foundation, an organization founded by the Holy Cross Convention to help women victims of oppression and violence. One evening in 1991, a pregnant woman approached Sister Lucy Kurien for help. The pregnant woman feared that her husband would kill her to bring another woman into her house. So the woman asked Sister Lucy Kurien for shelter to spend the night, but Sister Lucy told the woman to go home without fear and promised to get her husband to come to her senses the next day. Because Sister Lucy Kurien grew up in a safe family environment, she didn't know that one night would make such a difference in the life of that pregnant woman. That same night the woman's husband intoxicated, set her on fire. Sister Lucy actually saw the burnt woman and heard her pain and screams. Everyone put out the fire and took her to the hospital, but 90 percent of her body was burnt. She died of burns, along with her seven-month-old fetus. Sister Lucy was devastated by the incident and regretted that she could not save the woman. The idea of moving away from this cruel world came to her mind but her colleagues changed her mind and advised her to work to improve the situation of such women. One of her colleagues was Father Francis D'Souza. Sister Lucy then decided to build a rightful home for the abused and traumatized women, where they would feel safe. And out of that came the NGO "Maher". In the process, Father Francis D'Souza provided financial support to "Maher" and asked many friends abroad to help the Maher organization. "Maher" means "mother's house", a place of hope, a place of belonging and understanding. Women, victims of violence in rural, urban, and slum areas of India, including Maharashtra, regardless of gender, caste, creed, or religion, efforts are being made to provide shelter to children as well as orphans, girls, and mentally challenged women, and provide them with mental support as well as education and vocational training so that they can stand on their own feet and live a proud life in the society. The organization "Maher" emerged as a shelter for needy women, but the number of deprived, orphaned children and mentally handicapped women rejected by society was also large in the society.
