About the Organization:Dr Anjali Morris Education and Health Foundation (AMF) offer assessment and remedial educational assistance to students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). AMF train teachers to work with these students in English and Marathi mediums of instruction. AMF is the first accredited Global Partner in India of the International Dyslexia Association.
Issue:Lack of awareness regarding SLD results in bright students slowly falling behind in class work, leading to ultimately failing classes. Not identifying the cause for this failure starts to work on the self-confidence and overall self-belief. Unfortunately, parents and teachers make it worse by publicly criticizing them for not performing well. This vicious circle is resulting in making these students unfit to become effective learners and members of our society. Statistics prove that 20-30 percent entrepreneurs are persons with Dyslexia. Investing time and effort in every student is beneficial to us as a society at large. These students do very well given the right inputs.
Action:Dyslexia is unbiased to geography, wealth, language religion or any other social differentiator. We want to spread awareness about this invisible disability within the ecosystem of a student. We are looking at conducting 100 awareness workshops on the topic of Specific Learning Disabilities in schools across different cities in Maharashtra. The workshop will educate the audiences (school teachers, managements and parents) about the existence of this invisible disability, the impact of this disability, red flags which the teachers should look out for to help in early identification of SLD. The cost of conducting one awareness workshop will be Rs.5000/- including travel stay and manpower cost. Awareness followed by acceptance is the first step towards helping and encouraging a child with SLD.
Impact :The awareness programs have 2 distinct audiences: Teachers and Parents. Between the 2 groups the qualitative impact is two-fold. If the schools are aware and sensitive it will help increase the academic progress of the child. Once the parents are sensitized it will help them nurture the child such that it will not hamper the self-esteem, confidence and self-worth of the child. Both these inputs will help the student become an effective member of a society. Impact in number terms – Teachers have the potential to use this knowledge to help every batch of students who enroll in the school. They will be ambassadors of this mission for their productive years. Each teacher has a minimum of 25 working years.
